Umrah Requirements

Umrah Essentials: Comprehensive Requirements for a Blessed Journey

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time of the year, in contrast to the Hajj, which has specific dates. If someone is planning to go on Umrah, they must fulfill certain requirements and complete various administrative procedures. Here’s a general list of requirements for Umrah:

    • Valid Passport: A passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of intended travel.
    • Umrah Visa: You need to apply for an Umrah visa through an accredited travel agency or agent. The Saudi government does not allow individuals to apply for Umrah visas on their own.
    • 2 Passport-sized Photos: Typically, the background should be white, and the person should be facing the camera directly, with a neutral expression.
    • Proof of Vaccination: Depending on the country you are traveling from and the health regulations in place, you may need to show proof of certain vaccinations. As of my last update, meningitis vaccination was a common requirement, but it’s essential to check current health advisories.
    • Confirmed Return Ticket: Proof of round trip flight or transportation.
    • Proof of Accommodation: Confirmed hotel reservations in Mecca and, if applicable, Medina.
    • Mahram Accompanying Document: For women under a certain age (usually below 45), traveling without a male relative (Mahram), a notarized certificate of relationship and permission from the Mahram is required. Note: The age requirement may vary, so it’s essential to confirm with local agencies.
    • Biometrics: In some countries, biometric data (like fingerprints) is captured before the issuance of the visa.
    • Certificate of Conversion: For new converts to Islam, a certificate from an Islamic center or mosque may be required to prove the conversion.
    • Payment of Umrah Fees: Some countries might be required to pay specific Umrah fees, especially if the pilgrim has performed Umrah in the previous Islamic year.
    • Travel Insurance: While this may not be a strict requirement, it’s always advisable to have travel insurance covering your journey.
    • Awareness of Rituals: While not a “documentary” requirement, it’s essential for pilgrims to familiarize themselves with the rituals of Umrah to ensure they perform them correctly
